SEAFORD, Del. – Bioenergy Devco, LLC, the company creating the new Bioenergy Innovation Center outside of Seaford, shared additional resources to provide accurate, detailed information about anaerobic digestion and the new facility in advance of a public hearing on the project.  The Delaware Department of Natural Resources & Environmental Control is holding a virtual public hearing on the project tonight, Oct. 26, at 6 p.m. Details are here: https://dnrec.alpha.delaware.gov/public-hearings/bioenergy/.

The expanded Bioenergy Innovation Center – at the site of the 20-year-old former Perdue AgriRecycle facility, which has been operated by Bioenergy Devco since 2020 – will use the safe, tested, proven system of anaerobic digestion to turn protein production waste into clean, renewable natural gas to be used by Chesapeake Utilities customers,  as well as a soil additive that will be composted onsite into a product that can be used in agriculture, horticulture projects, community gardens, and other projects.

The Bioenergy Innovation Center will help reduce pollution in the surrounding community and along the Delmarva, by taking protein processing waste and other products and converting them into clean, renewable fuels and healthy soil additives. Each year, the anaerobic digestion process will reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, equivalent to taking nearly 19,000 gasoline-powered cars off the road annually.

“We have worked over the last year to discuss this project with our neighbors, through many community conversations, site tours, and forums,” said Shawn Kreloff, founder and CEO of Bioenergy Devco. “We know that local residents still have questions, and we encourage them to attend tonight’s public hearing or send us questions at bioenergyic.com, including in Spanish and Haitian Creole.”

Anaerobic digestion is a natural process that operates much like a cow’s stomach;  the technology used for commercial anaerobic digestion systems is hundreds of years old. In Bioenergy Devco’s 25-year history, it has built over 250 anaerobic digesters around Europe and the United States and manages 140 anaerobic digesters. The company has received an overwhelmingly positive response to its first facility in the United States, located in Jessup, Maryland.
